There have probably been worse building sites in Cambridgeshire, although perhaps none quite as bad this one. Here was an Environment Agency which seemed to care little about the environment and a builder hoping to make a quick profit but after ending up knee deep in mud walked away leaving two of three houses they built with a rat infestation and the owner of the third having to pick up the bill for repairs. Add to this the bank which financed the project but abandoned any pretence at ESG it championed on its website, a landowner desperate for money and a developer and land agent running rings around a local authority which had taken its eye off the ball to champion a four day working week and a development which at the beginning no-one objected to managed to send everyone living nearby BANANAs (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone.)
The Day The Builders Came, due for publication in the Spring of 2026 will be a step-by-step account of what, today, is a typical building housing development explaining what went wrong, lessons learned, and how next time things will be different.
